WHILE with the Eagles Production, Sophie Nantongo’s contribution seemed like surplus to requirements, but since leaving the group, she has gradually evolved into a big-time artiste to earn a nod to perform at the Club Silk unplugged session, usually reserved for those who have made a mark on the music scene.

On Thursday during the Club Beer and Jomayi-supported session, Nantongo showed why she is contending for the Pearl of Africa Music awards — Best Female artiste, Album of the year and Artiste of the year crowns. The unplugged sessions have a way of somehow “intimidating” artistes so those with ingenuity find ways of pleasing fans given that live music is not a very common feature in Uganda. After Charles Sekyewa had warmed up the crowd, Nantongo leapt on stage, but soon left it and mingled with the crowd to shake their hands.

Although the crowd was average, Nantongo did not disappoint. She journeyed on with her first breakthrough song in her career, Binyuma to other favourites such as Kisanja, Wansumulula and Amaggwa. In fact, there was an encore for the last three, which she sung after changing into another outfit. Her Pigeon Band was good, prompting some fans to quip that they could give Jeckaki Band a run for their money. Jeckaki have played for several artistes at the sessions.

The show’s highlight was when Nantongo danced with actor John Ssegawa, while Ssegawa’s love Ruth Wanyana went for Nantongo’s husband, “Kagoma”, amidst cheers. With Ssegawa, she repeatedly sung the line in Amaggwa, “You touched where others don’t touch!”
