FIFA referee Ali Kalyango will be the man in the centre for the Super League opener between giants SC Villa and Express FC tomorrow.

Soccer governing body FUFA is not taking chances with the game to be telecast live on television, and have picked Uganda’s best referees, to set a high standard that they will expect others to emulate through the entire 2007-8 season.

Kalyango will be assisted by referees Nelson Mubanda and Hussein Bugembe, with Dennis Batte as fourth official, according to competition’s committee secretary Moses Magogo.

FIFA-ranked referees can handle matches anywhere in the world.

“It is a historical match and we want none other than the best to officiate it. The game will be live across the world, so it’s an opportunity to showcase what Uganda can offer the world of football,” said Magogo.

Magogo also clarified that the kick-off time at Mandela stadium, Namboole is actually 7pm, and not 6pm.

“All is set. We are just looking forward to the kick off,” Magogo stressed.

Express and Villa are set for the game, and have secured new jerseys branded with players’ names . Express imported two sets from England and Thailand, and they were branded at Kwera, a Kampala textile firm.

Express team manager Muhamud Kateregga also confirmed that Joseph Kabagambe, Omar Hitmana and Morley Byekwaso’s jerseys were also printed despite queries about their eligibility to move from Rwanda.

Villa also bought 35 pieces from Kwera.

“We had to purchase one set first. The away jersey will come later. We are now ready for kick-off,” Villa secretary Luyimbazi Mugalu stated.

FUFA is also ensuring well trained medical personnel are on hand at every game. A one-day medical course for all Super Division clubs was held yesterday at FUFA House by top doctors Opika Opoka and Ronald Kisolo.
