SERGEANT Michael Akira, a former LRA rebel who has been terrorising residents of Okidi in Kitgum district, has joined the army.

“Akira, one of the four-armed thugs who have been terrorising locals, was surrounded and forced to surrender. He handed to the UPDF 15th battalion a sub-machine gun with 60 bullets. Our forces are also searching for his colleagues,” the army’s 5th Division public relations officer, Lt. Deo Akiiki, said in a press release on Saturday.

He added that the troops also killed three Karimojong cattle rustlers who tried to raid cattle in Orom sub-county in Kitgum.

The 401 Brigade, under the command of Lt. Col. Kabangira and is based in Kitgum, will handle insurgencies in Kitgum district, while the 503 Brigade will do the same in Pader.

The army publicist said some Karimojong cattle rustlers who wanted to steal cows in Namukora were intercepted by the UPDF.

He urged the rustlers to embrace the disarmament exercise and handover all their weapons. “Gone are the days of raiding with impunity,” he warned.
