PARENTING
By Grace Nandutu
Vacation has started for some Senior Fours and by the beginning of December, parents will be having “full houses†with all their children back from school.
However, as students go back home from school, they come with many changes, including new traits. Traits can affect the individual’s life positively or negatively.
School is a place of change engineered towards positive development. But many times, other students or even teachers sow wrong seeds of character into students. Such traits include eating habits, for example:
-Preferring snacks (which in most cases are not healthy foods as they mainly comprise “junk foodâ€) to actual meals.
- Different styles of greeting, many of which may stumble the elders. lPersonal hygiene like bathing, brushing, washing clothes, cleaning shoes, while others do not wash for the whole week. lSome students can learn dishonesty, telling lies and stealing.
- Other habits picked from school are lesbianism and homosexuality, use of slang and other language styles, some of it vulgar. Traits can also impart a positive effect on the individual: - Some students learn how to pray from others while at school. However, others may detest prayer through the influence of peers. lThey can also learn obedience through the school rules and regulations, learn respect through authority, leadership skills and responsibility to oneself and others.
- They can also learn socialisation and making friends, budgeting and decision-making.
Parents should not leave it all to teachers. Get interested in the growth and development of your child. Take note of the changes taking place in their lives and encourage those that are positive, but discourage negative ones. If your child came back home with an item you know you did not buy for them, how would you react? If you realised that your child’s language has changed, would you take a step of correction as a parent or simply look on?
Parents can do much more towards the development of good character traits into their children. Some parents prefer having their children at school with teachers because they do not know what to do with them as they grow and adopt new habits. Remember it is your primary responsibility to take care of your child and inculcate in him/her whatever good thing you desire.
Therefore, take time to love your children, be their friend and help them to open up to you. Develop a relationship that will enable your child to learn from you. Take time to understand them and also learn from them. Develop a culture that will leave a good legacy.
If a child has been positively influenced, she or he in turn tries to influence his/her siblings by instilling in them the culture of hard work and responsibility.
Students, on the other hand, should learn to be obedient to parents, knowing they always want the best for you. You should be willing to change and avoid negative influence from friends. As you go home for the long holiday, take care of yourself and know that your future depends entirely on how you take life.
