THE Government wants to carry out emergency repairs on Nalubaale bridge at the former Owen Falls Dam in Jinja.

Charles Muganzi, the permanent secretary in the works ministry, has called for proposals from engineering consultants to supervise the repairs.

In a notice, Muganzi said the bridge’s structures have deterioration due to environmental and traffic pressure.

“Investigations reveal serious deterioration of some of the underwater bridge piers,” he said, adding that there are unacceptable slab movements over sections of the 50-year-old bridge.

Muganzi said the civil works would include repair of the underlying pier surfaces like the underwater pier sections, repairs of joints and edge supports to the deck slabs under the cantilevered section of the bridge.
It will also include deck repair and replacement of asphaltic concrete over the bridge’s surface.

The supervision will include desk study of available documentation, review of previous study recommendations, preparation of tender documents, assisting the works ministry in the selection of a contractor and management and supervision of the works.
