THE Government has donated 20 garbage skips worth sh120m to Entebbe Municipality in preparation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

While receiving the skips at the municipal offices recently, the mayor, Stephen Kabuye, hailed the donation. “Some of the skips are compatible with our refuse truck which was donated to us by our friends in Sweden. It will now be put to work immediately,” Kabuye said.

He said the modern Scania refuse vehicle can accommodate six skips in one route, which will be a good start for the ‘Keep Entebbe Clean’ campaign. He, however, added that the council lacks platforms where to put the skips for easy removal by the truck, but promised that they would look into the matter.

He warned drivers who operate garbage vehicles to handle them carefully and cautioned them about demanding money from residents for collecting garbage. He said anyone found doing so will be apprehended.

“We pay salaries to all our employees for their work done and it’s not right for them to demand money from anyone,” he said.

Kabuye also revealed that the Government has donated fuel worth sh5m to be used for collecting garbage during CHOGM.

The town clerk, Joseph Kimbowa cautioned drivers who siphon fuel not to tamper with fuel meant for that period. “It will be disastrous when donated fuel gets finished before the summit is over,” said Kimbowa.
