Turn your trash into a treasure

INSTEAD of throwing away those expired aspirins, you can use them to make your flowers last longer. Think twice before you discard an item that has served its original purpose. You can actually give it a new lease of life by turning it into something useful. All you need is to look at your trash in a more creative way. Here are some ideas of thinking outside the garbage ‘box’ and turning your trash into a treasure.

A cracked glass can act as a candle holder. Place your scented candle into the glass and place it on a bathroom shelve as you enjoy that soak. You can also place it on a dinning table for a candle-lit dinner.

Turn that old CD case into a pretty desk calendar. What you have to do is to bend it back and insert your well-designed cards of the different months. The cards have to be cut to fit the CD case.

Bottle tops can become pieces for any board game like checkers, snakes and ladders. You only need a little paint to colour them.

Turn that empty tin of detergent powder into a hang pegs container.
That small plastic film container can safely keep your buttons and small pins. You can also use it to store your coins instead of overloading your wallet with them.

Easy up key distinction by painting their handles with old nail varnish. This helps you to different which key to insert into which lock.

Collect all your old clothes and push them into a pillowcase. Sew up the open end of the pillowcase to make yourself a comfortable pillow.

Old socks are handy when it comes to easy cleaning. Slip your hand in and wipe dust off your tables, shelves, lamp sheds and counters.

Ephie, an advertising sales executive, uses a matchbox as a travel sewing kit. “Being small, the matchbox fits perfectly in any handbag. It carries my needle and a few yards of thread that are handy in fixing a loose button or a hem that is coming out if I’m at office’” she says.

Annete, a housewife in Bweyogerere, uses old boxes to store her children’s toys. “Boxes help me keep the house organized and the children know where to find their toys or where to keep them after playing. They call the box the ‘toys’ bedroom’,” she says.

She also uses old toothbrush holders as flower vases. “I love recycling old things into decor pieces. I stick stems of my dried flowers into the toothbrush holders. The results are perfectly arranged bouquets that I place in various rooms.”

So go ahead and ‘recycle’ that old item and give it a new purpose.
