APART from roasting soya beans to make a snack, we discovered that you can easily process a beverage and flour for your family out of soya beans. Joseph Kasumba, a production manager with East African Basic Foods, says soya beverage is very nutritious. It is a good source of Vitamin B complex, calcium, protein, potassium and natural fats.

Kasumba adds that the beverage is free from tripysm, cholesterol and caffeine. He explains how one can convert the soya seeds into a beverage:

Procedure
-Select/sort the dried soya seeds to remove the stones
-Roast the seeds on fire of up to 150 temperature
-Put it aside to cool
-Mill the seeds using a blender to fine powder
- Use the powder as a beverage like tea or coffee.

Kasumba says you can also make soya flour at home. He adds that the flour is multi-purpose: it is used for sauce alone or mixed with other soups. It is also used as a soup thickener.

He adds that the flour offers adequate amounts of protein required by our bodies. To make soya flour Kasumba says you follow the procedure below:

- Sort the seeds to remove stones and unwanted dirt

-Roast them on gentle fire
-Haul the seeds to remove husks
-Using a blender or a grinding mill, mill the seeds to fine flour.
-Store the flour in a dry container.

Recipe
-Heat a little oil
- Add onions and a few tomatoes to the oil and stir until soft
- Add Soya flour, hot water and stir
-Boil until ready (when it begins to thicken)
-Add salt to taste and serve.

Soya flour, when added to any other vegetables, makes delicious soup. Apart from using the flour for food, Kasumba says it can also be an antidote for persons with accidental poisoning. In that case, four tablespoons of the flour are mixed in a mug of cold water and given to the victim to drink as first aid before being rushed to hospital. The proteins in the flour fight the poison to slow down the reaction.
