HEAVY construction equipment was moved to the site of the new Busoga Palace. Although half-built the palace, located eight kilometres from Jinja town on Bugembe Hill, promises a fine view of lake Victoria.

But a lot of work has to be done. For example, the elegant colonnade surrounding the palace is yet to be been joined to the second floor balcony.

The perimeter wall around the large five-acre site is finished, as security appears to have been a prime consideration in the palace design.

The architects, KK Partnership of Kampala, designed the sh7.7b palace in phases. The first phase included the removal of the ruins of the old palace.

But until the palace is completed – projected for 2009 – Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki will continue living in the residential suburb of Jinja.

Visits to the Kyabazinga and the palace are now planned as part of a bid to raise revenue from tourists.

Royal tours are popular. Tourists pay 15 pounds to visit Buckingham Palace in London, UK and nearly as much for visits to Africa’s surviving kingdoms.

I was part of a big group of visitors to the Asantehene’s Parade of Golden Stool at the Ashanti palace in Kumasi, Ghana.

The Busoga Kingdom is also taking its tourism potential very seriously.
