KENYAN golfer Mary Karano stepped up gear in the final round yesterday to retain the Uganda Ladies Open title.

The Nairobi-based star led right after Friday’s opening round to win the domestic ladies golf’s top prize with ease at the par-72 Kitante course.

Karano took a five stroke lead on Friday, was nine better on Saturday before clinching victory in the 54-hole stroke play show.

“It is a nice feeling to win once again. I enjoyed my game,” she remarked.

Karano, with 17 years playing experience, was boosted by a birdie on the par-4 number 7.

“I was lucky to have my balls on the fairway and my putting was a little better than in the previous rounds,” Karano explained. The champion was 14 strokes better than Uganda’s Jasper Kamukama.

Kamukama, yet to win the title, will be content with claiming her best position in the annual competition.

Former winner Sophie Viggo of Tanzania, just like Uganda’s Eva Okatch and Jenina Nasimolo, finished within the top six.

Tanzanian youngster Angel Ethon, making her maiden appearance, finished sixth overall.

The Uganda Ladies Golf Union event attracted over 100 players from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

There were two other subsidiary events for another group of ladies and the men.

The competition was sponsored by Celtel Uganda and Standard Chartered Bank.
