THE British High Commissioner, Francois Gordon, has launched a reprinted version of a book commemorating Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s last visit to Uganda 53 years ago.
The book was launched during a breakfast meeting yesterday at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala ahead of the Commonwealth meeting (CHOGM).
Brown said the book was an account of the Queen’s historic visit.
The book titled: “The Royal Visit to Uganda,†was first published by the Government’s information department, edited and designed by Roy Fenton.
The reprinted version has glossy pages, black and white photographs illustrating the events of the Queens’ visit from April 28-30, 1954.
The photographs were taken by A.C.T Ward, B.M Cavanagh, Harry Hensser, Rita Holden, J. Howard, Hans Hugmann, Cyri Ehraich, Peter Scott, and Horace Race White, on behalf of the British Overseas Airways Corporation.
Former Ugandan ambassador to Britain, Eng. James Zikusoka, who was present during the 1954 visit, said: “I was an engineering assistant with Jinja Municipal Council at the time. I had the opportunity to see the Queen and I had never seen a beautiful English lady like her.â€
Ambassador James Mugume, the Permanent Secretary in the foreign affairs ministry said: This book will connect Ugandans to a visit that happened over half a century ago. She came to open the Owen Falls Dam and she returns when energy is the crucial input into our next phase of transformation.â€
Moses Zikusoka, the marketing manager of QG Saatchi and Saatchi, the company handling the summit’s publicity, said the book was an extension of the campaign.
“We wanted to capture and evoke national pride. We have had the opportunity to reprint the book and want to publicise it and make it available to people. It is a historical journal.â€
