Muhwezi case for Nov 20 KAMPALA The High Court has set November 20 for the hearing of an application by former health minister Jim Muhwezi seeking to review a ruling stating that the Inspector General of Government (IGG) has powers to prosecute him. Muhwezi, along with Dr. Alex Kamugisha and Mike Mukula, former health state ministers, as well as Alice Kaboyo, a former presidential aide, are challenging the IGG’s powers to prosecute them for alleged forgery, financial loss and embezzlement of sh1.6b for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) programme. The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate, Margaret Tibulya, had overruled their argument stating that the IGG was only mandated to prosecute them for charges of alleged corruption and abuse of public office.
Umeme upgrades KAMPALA The load-shedding, experienced in a few areas in Kampala, is due to the network upgrading in preparation for the Commonwealth summit. Robert Kisubi, Umeme’s corporate communication manager, yesterday said the company had invested $100m (about sh175b) in the rehabilitation network, which started in April. The upgrade involves replacement and addition of transformers on the system, as well as the strengthening of wires and replacement of rotten poles. Kisubi stressed that there was no day time load shedding.
Railway parts recovered KAMPALA The Police have recovered at least 38 tonnes of rail parts stolen from the Kampala-Western railway line. The commandant of the Uganda Railways Police, Margaret Hirema, told journalists on Monday that the Police in Lyantonde, led by the area criminal investigations department officer, Osuna Opendi, recently intercepted two trucks loaded with rails and slippers. Hirema said the items were loaded at Kamusene village in Mubende district. The truck driver, Davis Ssengendo and his turn boy, Moses Kakuru, were arrested and charged with malicious damage of property, theft and being in possession of stolen property. They were released on bail and will reappear in court on December 5.
