AFRICAN universities sports body, FASU, wants sh6bn budget to host the fifth edition of All Africa University Games at Makerere University next July.

President of the local organising committee John Ekudu told a press conference at Makerere University Main Hall yesterday, that the money will be used in preparations to host the 3000 athletes from 35 countries.

Ekudu, who doubles as Makerere University dean of students, said that they were planning to construct a stadium, improve the road infrastructure around the university and renovate all the halls to accommodate the visiting teams. He explained that the facelift process started on Tuesday with works on the main road.

“We hope to provide an athletes village. We launched the renovation of the roads yesterday because it is a great thing for us to host 35 countries here,” Ekudu said.

“It is true we have had financial problems but we shall find money to improve these facilities in time. In case we fail to complete the stadium in time, we shall use other grounds from outside the university.”

Secretary of the committee Peninnah Kabenge, also president of the National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU), said that Makerere had already contributed sh100m with a pledge for another sh300m.

She said that they expect sh2b of the budget to be realised from participation fees, while the bigger part is expected in donations, sale of souvenirs and government grants.

Teams will compete in, among others, football, basketball, swimming, rugby, netball, volleyball, tennis and athletics.
Algeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Chad, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Senegal and South Africa have already confirmed participation.

The fourth edition of the games was held in Tshwane where Uganda emerged second to hosts South Africa.
