WORKS on the modern synthetic pitch at Lugogo has resumed after stalling for more than two years, giving hockey enthusiasts a smile.
The $258,000 (sh425.7m) project is sponsored by the International Hockey Federation and Olympic Solidarity.

Construction work by Pegasus International Engineering Consultants only resumed after government waived taxes on the synthetic carpet that was shipped into the country in July.

The delay in construction, will however cost the local hockey federation an extra $12,000 (sh19.8m), according to the project’s technical director Chris Nugent.

Once complete, the national facility is expected to boost hockey development in the country, a step towards the sport regaining its past glory. Uganda reached the World Hockey Championships in the 1970s.

According to Uganda Hockey Association president Henry Magino, more help from sponsors is required to see that they achieve the dream.

“Our appeal goes to all corporate organisations and individuals for the success of the project,” the former international begged yesterday.

The pitch, will be the most modern surface in East and Central Africa, and third in Africa after Egypt and South Africa.

The final layer will be laid by December, according to Pegasus International official Simon Onyut, who was at the site.
