KABAROLE district plans to construct a sh480m garbage recycling plant at Kiteere in Fort Portal municipality.
The plant, funded by the Government and World Bank, will turn garbage into manure and sell it to farmers.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday, the environment minister, Maria Mutagamba, said the plant will turn garbage into a source of revenue.
She said the project would be introduced in nine other municipalities and town councils countrywide.
Mutagamba said the plant would also offer employment to the residents.
“There is an opportunity for employment. There is need to train the youth on how to market and use manure.â€
She hailed the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for setting up the project.
The minister said the municipality will get 20 garbage skips and urged leaders to ensure that they are well maintained
The NEMA executive director, Dr. Aryamanya Mugisha, said the plant would be constructed in six months.
The Fort Portal mayor, Asaba Ruyonga, said the east, west and southern divisions of the municipality contributed 10% of the funds for the project.
He added that electricity and water would soon be installed at the site.
Present were Kabarole LC5 chairman, Michael Mugisa and MPs Steven Kaliba (Fort Portal) and Steven Kasaija Kangwera (Burahya county).
