5 held over robberies
KAMPALA - The Police arrested five suspected armed robbers in Kyebando, Kawempe division last week. The 12-hour operation carried out by the Rapid Response Unit and the local council executive followed a public outcry over the high rate of robberies and killings in the area. According to the Katale Zone LC1 chairman, Robert Ssekabanja, the suspects are believed to be behind the shooting of four bodaboda cyclists last week. He identified them as Francis Lutalo, John Masajage, Nasur, Kibuuka and Paul, all residents of Kyebando. They also recovered five bullets at Kibuuka’s house and a stolen motorcycle from Lutalo’s house. The suspects were detained at the Rapid Response Unit’s headquarters in Kireka. Ssekabanja said Lutalo’s wife had earlier reported that he had gun. “This is a big racket. They steal motorcycles from several parts of the country.” He said the suspects change the registration numbers of the motor cycles.

Lugazi sugar staff strike
MUKONO - The Police was deployed at the Sugar Corporation of Lugazi (SCOUL) as workers went on strike on Friday, burning several houses. The workers, who hurled stones at tractors ferrying sugarcanes to the factory, complained of poor remuneration and bad working conditions. They also petitioned the Workers’ MP, Joramu Pajobo and the National Union of Plantation and Agriculture Workers to intervene in the matter. The district Police commander, James Aurien, said no suspects were arrested. The company’s public relations officer, Emmanuel Masumbuko, said senior officials met on Saturday over the matter.
