THE Northern Bypass has opened to ease the traffic flow during the Commonwealth meeting this week. Speaking after touring the smooth 21km snaky road, stretching from Bweyogerere to Busega on Monday, works minister John Nasasira said the temporary measure would help reduce the traffic jam during the historic meet, expected to attract over 10,000 visitors.
“This opening is for the CHOGM period only. It will solve a lot of problems in the city,†Nasasira said.
Thus, vehicles, especially the transit heavy-duty ones from Jinja and western Uganda can access their way using the new road. Most of the road is already tarmacked with only shoulders and signposts left.
Taxis from the western side of Kampala can access the city through Nateete-Wakaligga-Namirembe Road or Nateete-Kabusu-Rubaga to Namirembe Road. Those from the eastern side can branch off at Bweyogerere to Namboole Bypass up to Kireka.
Traffic Police will be at hand to ensure that wherever the road has been closed, there is at least an alternative route, the minister promised.
The public relations officer for Salini Constructions, Chris Kamukama, announced that the Bukoto-Kisasi Bridge would be closed permanently and traffic diverted to Ntinda-Kisasi roundabout, until works were completed.
“We are through with about 90% of the work. We expect to hand over the road by March 2008,†he said.
Meanwhile, the Police said the Kyebando-Nsooba Bridge connecting to Mulago trading centre will be closed for one week.
The traffic would be diverted to Bukoto-Kyebando roundabout.
The Police commissioner for traffic and road safety, Stephen Kasiima, appealed to the drivers and residents in the affected areas to comply with the issued guidelines.
“We regret any inconvenience but it will be short-lived. We, therefore, request all the affected persons to follow the road signs and work with officers on duty for a successful Commonwealth summit.â€
