EIGHTEEN-year-old Linnet Namawajje was the proud mother to produce the first baby in the newly constructed maternity ward at Kisubi Hospital recently.

The new ward was constructed at a cost of sh309m with the help of friends from Manus Unidas (Spain) and Civitanova of Italy. The same friends have also pledged another sh72m for medical equipment. Local donors included Bank of Uganda, Civil Aviation Authority, Centenary Bank and Marianum Press.

The Medical Superintendent Kisubi Hospital, Dr Robert Asaba, said the new ward has 42 beds, with three in the self-contained VIP section and four in the private wing. There is also an isolation section with four beds suitable for mothers who have lost their babies or those with post-natal complications.

Asaba said the old maternity wing was a single room with nine beds where only maternity cases were admitted. “It also deprived expectant mothers of privacy as they shared the same corridors, bathrooms and toilets with other patients including men,” he said.

Asaba added that the new ward is expected to solve the problem of congestion and enable the hospital improve on the quality of care of pregnant mothers.

Busiro MP Joseph Balikkuddembe Mutebi, who is on the new hospital management board as a legal advisor, proposed an ultra modern theatre to cater for the needs of people in the neighbourhood.

The hospital administrator, Sr. Christine Kizza, hailed the Government’s support through Wakiso district.

She also appealed for continuous support to help the hospital improve health service delivery in the area.
