FASHION watchers held their breath when Camilla Parker Bowles got married to Prince Charles. Like most women, she was transformed into a beautiful bride from head to toe. Her two wedding outfits were stunning, chic and fabulous, setting the trend of what was to follow for the wife of Britain’s king-in-waiting.

The ivory outfit she wore for the civil ceremony was described as “elegant and gently romantic” while the second one for the church blessing was also praised for being “stunning and exquisite”.

Some would say, however, that this stylish trend began on the day her engagement to Prince Charles was officially announced at Windsor Castle.

Her simple red dress was set off by a three-strand pearl necklace and matching pearl earrings, black shoes and a black clutch bag. Since then, HRH the Duchess of Cornwall and Duchess of Rothesay (Scotland) went for simple but elegant and understated style and it has worked for her.

The Duchess has blossomed since then and was even listed among Britain’s 10 fashion icons of 2005 by Tatler Magazine. Her evening gowns are clearly designed to work as a backdrop for the fabulous gems in her tiara and other jewellery. However, the gems compliment rather than overshadow the gowns, allowing the Duchess to stand out for who she is in terms of her position.

The more confidence she has gained, being part of the royal family and a very senior member at that, the more her style has improved. Although she has become quite glamorous, Her Royal Highness never comes across as “mutton dressed as lamb”. She dresses appropriately for her age, complexion and position.

But what sets the Duchess apart is her big warm smile that reaches her eyes and brightens up her face. Her laughter seems to come from deep within, making her appear down-to-earth, friendly, humorous and approachable.

Like her mother-in-law, the Queen, the Duchess always wears a brooch on the left hand shoulder and carries handbags rather than shoulder bags. Shawls mean a lot to her and she usually carries one. Her shoes are elegant but not too high.

All in all, HRH the Duchess of Cornwall has become a fashion icon but I bet there is more to come.
