A microwave oven is an electric gadget that uses high frequency electromagnetic waves. Electricity is converted into microwave energy and transmitted by a magnetron tube to the oven cavity, where it is absorbed.

Richard Sseviiri, a chef and nutritionist at Healthy Snack at Garden City, Kampala, says that apart from warming food, microwaves can also be used to cook food.

However, he cautions that foodstuffs like potatoes and sausages should be pierced before cooking to reduce pressure inside the gadget. The ovens come in different brands and sizes. It is advisable to choose a multi-purpose one that can warm and grill.

Simon Odong, a technician at Best Connections on William Street, Kampala, cautions that though microwave ovens are handy, they should be handled with care.

For instance, while warming food, one should avoid putting metallic cans or containers inside the oven as this may cause pressure to build up, leading to explosions.

Microwave ovens are available at Best Connections on William Street, Shoprite Lugogo and most supermarkets and shops dealing in kitchenware.

Prices range from sh200,000 to sh500,000, depending on the size and brand.
