Hajjati Sophia Nantongo won the Best Female Artiste of the Year award in the just concluded PAM Awards. Pidson Kareire had a chat with her:

How do you feel as best female artiste?
Of course, great. This is what we look for. It gives me satisfaction. It is my success.

Who did you sing Amaggwa kumeme (thorns in the heart) for?
No one special! I did not write that song myself; I only sang it. Ask Silver Kyagulanyi who wrote the song.

Are you married?
Yes, to Hajji Abdu Mubiru.

But you hardly use his name!
Yeah! People are more familiar with Sophia Nantongo.

Why didn’t you dedicate the song to him?
It is irrelevant to him. I dedicated it to all my fans, who get the message in it. I wish they could learn a thing or two.

Don’t men make passes at you after shows?
Unless they are mad, how can they risk when they know I am married? The lustful ones maybe but I don’t give them time. I always rush home immediately after the performances.

Won’t your popularity bring jealousy from your co-wives?
Who are they? Do you know some? At least, he has never showed them or told me about them. But if there are any, they have to accept that I am popular and live with it.

They say money, fame and marriage don’t go well together. How are you managing?
My priority is love - not money. If you allow money to dominate your thoughts, you become a slave of the sorts. Whether you are famous or not, a husband will always play his role as a husband. Once you mishandle these issues, you get repeated quarrels and other related conflicts.

Doesn’t music cheat your family time?
I have so much time for my family. I normally sing for few hours and I go back immediately after the show. I don’t spend more than two hours at a show.

If you were given ministry of gender what would you do for women?
I would sensitise them about realities of nature. I don’t think we can have the so-called equal rights. Some women fight for equal rights, but it is a fallacy; very impossible. So, I would make sure every woman is aware of the facts. This would bring peace other than being misled by people who are trying to satisfy their egos.
