Dear Doctor,
I have been suffering from arthritis since December last year. The doctor prescribed prednisolone and Indocil, but I would get chest pain after taking the tablets. Later, the doctor prescribed diclofenac and cimetidine, but I did not get any improvement. Tests for diabetes and sickle cell were negative. What is arthritis? How can I be cured?

Dear Samuel,

ARTHRITIS is a term used to mean inflammation of a joint. Many things cause this condition. It may be due to infections, immune conditions, prolonged damage and crystal deposits.
Symptoms include joint swellings and pain. Some arthritis heals quickly, while others like gouts, are long-lasting.

Once a person has arthritis, doctors try to find the cause and treat it. In many cases, the problem may not be cured. The doctor will try to control the symptoms.

Your doctors gave you treatment to decrease the inflammation to control the pain. Unfortunately, the prescribed drugs have a side effect of causing ulcer-like pain in the stomach.

Talk to your doctors for a more complete diagnosis. They will also tell you what to expect from the treatment.
