THE Ministry of Education will recruit 2,000 teachers. Half of these will be science teachers, while 100 will teach Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The Assistant Commissioner for Secondary Education, Nsumba Lyazi, said this was in line with the sciences policy aimed at stimulating development. “The money for the project is available and the education service commission will advertise the jobs soon,” he said.
He was on Monday speaking during a stakeholders’ workshop on the establishment of science and computer laboratories in schools at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

Currently, the Uganda Communications Commission is in the process of establishing ICT facilities in 80 government-aided secondary schools and 43 district health facilities. A total of 886 computers are to be installed by June 2008.

Each school will receive 10 computers, while each health centre will receive two computers.

The beneficiaries were chosen basing on their capability to contribute to the operational costs. The five-year project, worth $1.2b, is part of the Rural Communications Development Fund programme adopted in 2001. The Uganda Communications Commission will to contribute 40% of the project cost, while the beneficiaries are to foot 60% for a period of five years.

The ICT state minister, Alituma Nsambu, said the project was part of a bigger national data transmission programme to link all districts.
