FEMALE inmates excited the male ones at Luzira Upper Prison when they visited their section on Saturday. The women smart in their checked pink prison uniforms, had been invited for the World AIDS Day celebrations.

They were closely guarded as they were led to the carpentry workshop for the celebrations. However, the women were not allowed to mix freely with their male counterparts for the six-hour duration of the function that attracted several prisons units.

The male inmates kept on referring to the women as ‘our wives’ whenever they got a chance to express themselves.

The men were all smiles as they occasionally whistled, clapped and waved to the women.

According to Ugandan laws, inmates have no conjugal rights and can only re-unite with their families after serving their sentences.

The female prisoners, who were led by their deputy officer in-charge, Rosemary Kitimbo, emerged winners after presenting a play and songs about HIV/AIDS.

They got a trophy and a goat. The other units that participated included Kampala Remand Home,

Murchison Bay Prison, Luzira Upper Prison (Boma) and the Condemned Section.

The competition was organised by the Prisons Health Department in conjunction with Kampala Extra region.

Apart from occasional visitors allowed once in a while, the Luzira Upper Prison has not had a large number of females at a go as it happened on Saturday. Wardresses are also not allowed in the premises.

Luzira Upper Prison houses prisoners who commit serious offences. It also houses those condemned to death.
Inmates in this section rarely get a chance to interact with the public.

They stand little chance of getting out of the facility, apart from when one is seriously sick and cannot be attended to from the Prisons hospital.

They are allowed to engage in outdoor games within the Maximum Security Prison.
