THE African Development Bank (ADB) and the Government are constructing five markets worth sh3.6b in Moyo district. The district engineer, Luis Drichi, said the work was expected to be completed in five months.

“These markets are constructed using a loan from the ADB under the North West Smallholders Agricultural Development Project.

“It seeks to help rural farmers fight poverty by enabling their produce access markets,” he said.

Drichi said the markets will be located in Dufile, Gimara, Lefori, Metu, and Moyo sub-counties.

Moyo district has eight sub-counties with a town council.

He revealed that the project begun in 2000, covering Adjumani, Moyo, Yumbe, Arua and Nebbi districts in the West Nile region.

“Under the Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture, the Government realised that marketing and road-construction were very important in fighting poverty,” observed Tobias Wayigo, the district commercial officer.

Moyo district vice-chairperson, Hilda Abio, who officiated at the launch of the construction, challenged the farmers to move away from subsistence farming into commercial agriculture.

“We want to see that your farm produce is sold here and buyers come to purchase it from here,” she said.

On behalf of the acting resident district commissioner, John Isse, warned the contractors against corruption.

Some farmers, however, complained that the markets were too small to accommodate all of them and their produce.
