Hawkes’ CHOGM gift

CLAIRE Hawkes, an English clarinetist based at Kampala Music School, on Friday gave a clarinet recital at Fairway Hotel, in honour of the Commonwealth Summit.

CLAIRE Hawkes, an English clarinetist based at Kampala Music School, on Friday gave a clarinet recital at Fairway Hotel, in honour of the Commonwealth Summit.

Her concert was attended by among others, CHOGM delegates who were staying at the hotel. Her hour-long performance carried marks of virtuosity, expertise and experience.

She played great pieces by English, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian composers. These included: Messager’s Solo de Concours, Bliss’ Pastoral, Weber’s Concertino, Hommage a Manuel de Falla (Bela Kovacs), Lorito Caprice (Gomez), Sonatina (Joseph Horovitz) and Suite Op157b.

The Ugandan pianists Paul Luggya and Fred Kiggundu Musoke and English violinist Julie MacRae, who accompanied Hawkes, also demonstrated unrivalled expertise.

Hawkes’ concert also featured Sopranos Beatrice Geria and Teddy Nantume who sang Rimsky Korsakov’s Song of the Shepherd and Puccini’s Quando quando m’en vo soletta, respectively.
