NORMALLY, a man is ready to release sperms (ejaculate) within four minutes of active thrusting during sex. A few men take very long (30 to 45 minutes) to ejaculate and it happens to be a popular among men. But when it takes too long, it becomes a problem.
Some people fail to come altogether when having sex with a partner, but can come while masturbating. It is thought that up to 3% of men have this problem of delayed ejaculation, or failure to ejaculate. And it is a sickness.
Causes It usually occurs in people who have had a strict upbringing, and are very controlled. A man may have a fear of losing control, or may just not like his partner that much. Others may have a fear of causing pregnancy, thinking that ‘sex is dirty’ or the ‘vagina is dirty’, restricting the spontaneity of sex. It has also been noted in some people who masturbate too much and those who have a different sexual orientation. Physical causes include some medicines, especially those for depression, alcohol and recreational drugs, illnesses like diabetes, spinal injuries and diseases of the prostrate.
Effects Many men would love to hold it forever, but delayed ejaculation is not good. In the long run, the man is frustrated, distressed and loses confidence. The partner feels that they cannot satisfy him, become resentful and feel insulted. They become sore during prolonged sex and getting pregnant becomes a problem too.
Management Treatment depends on the cause. For a man who has never ejaculated, it is best to consult a urologist for an examination to rule out physical problems. For the man who comes only during masturbation, counselling may be the best option. There is no instant cure. The sessions may include the partner.
Children In case there is a problem having children, there are options like artificial insemination or vitro fertilisation.
