HE is 78 years old and everybody expects him to be an example to the rest of society. But Wilson Mabunga alias kyanakyatimba of Makindye, a city suburb, was arrested on Wednesday night on allegations that he defrauded a man of sh18m in a bogus land deal.

The police said in August, Mabunga, together with John Kiirya, 30 and Simon Bbosa, 34, approached Ali Sserugo, a city businessman and promised to sell him land in Namugongo.

“Mabunga impersonated James Muloni, the land owner and sold the land to Sserugo,” Kampala Extra police chief told journalists at the Central Police Station in Kampala, where Mabunga and his colleagues were paraded.

But Bbosa was shocked to learn that somebody else was claiming the land.
“When construction at the plot started, Muloni, who had the genuine land title, confronted Sserugo,” Nsubuga said.
Mabunga and Sserugo proceeded to the land registry in Kampala where officials confirmed that the land title Sserugo got from Mabunga was forged.

“When they took them for verification, officials detected forged signatures on the land title Sserugo got from Mabunga,” Nsubuga stated, adding that the suspects were arrested shortly after.
The New Vision recently released a report about the increase in the number of fake land titles in circulation.
