UGANDA Cranes exploded the myth that Uganda-Rwanda matches are supposedly tight contests with a 2-0 masterful performance at the National Stadium here.

Well-taken efforts by Simeon Masaba and Assan Bajope — both off Dan Wagaluka’s artistry from set-piece situations— combined to ensure that yesterday’s clash was simply a mismatch.

Cranes sent their tally of goals scored to nine in two games.
The result literally propelled Uganda to the quarterfinals of the CECAFA Championship.

Again coach Laszlo Csaba’s preparations proved intelligent and sensationally effective despite a food poisoning scare that hit camp early in the day. Csaba knew that Cranes height advantage meant his team needed some additional ploy for set-piece situations.
With Wagaluka’s near perfect crosses, Cranes made their move.

On 69 minutes, Masaba darted at the near post in a dummy run that filled the Rwanda centre-backs with indecision, to connect home the first.

And in a similar situation, this time Bajope’s run caught two Rwanda defenders in two minds— whether to stick with Kitagenda or attend to Caesar Okuti. That allowed Bajope the split second to muscle in and head home the second on 86 minutes.

At that stage, it was certainly game over and Rwanda’s frustration grew before Mutesa Mafisango was sent off for a nasty challenge.

A man-of-the-match performance by Bajope and solid marking by Andrew Mwesigwa in particular made Rwanda danger-man Olivier Karekezi and Eric Gasana look as though they were engaged in a Sunday morning kick-about.
‘I suffered from a shin injury but could not walk off. I am the team captain and had to lead ,’ said Mwesigwa.

‘It was a great performance from everybody. The determination told in the result,’ said Csaba.
