AT least three passengers died and 21 others were injured when a Kigali-bound bus overturned in Ntungamo district yesterday. The Jaguar Bus that left Kampala at 3:00am, overturned a kilometre away from Ntungamo town at around 5:30am.

According to the Ntungamo deputy Police commander, David Balidawa, the bus, registration number UAG 110T, veered off the road and overturned due to speeding.

The acting commissioner of Police in charge of traffic and road safety, Steven Kasiima, identified the dead as Aggrey Andrew Oswa, Abdallatif Abudalla Kyalimpa and Rosette Mukamulahirwe.

Those in critical condition and admitted to Itojo Hospital are Gloria Rukundo, a resident of Kashongi in Nyabushozi, Bowamukona from the DR Congo and Odas Sibomana from Bujumbura, Burundi.
About 18 passengers with serious injuries, Police said, were rushed and admitted to Itojo and Mbarara hospitals, while those with minor injuries were offered first aid and left to proceed to Kigali for further medication.

Kasiima said the Police had not conclusively established the cause of the accident, but preliminary reports suggested that the bus swerved off the road after the lights suddenly failed.
Yesterday’s accident comes only two days after seven family members perished in a grisly accident in Busembatia, on the Iganga-Tirinyi highway.
