THE Ministry of Education and Sports will increase budgetary allocation for the inspection of schools from sh1.5b to sh2.5b, an official has revealed.

Joseph Muvawala, the assistant commissioner in charge of budget and planning in the ministry, said the funds would be available in the 2008/09 fiscal year.

With the new arrangement, a district inspector of schools will be able to get a sh10,000 transport allowance per day, while sub-county chiefs will get sh5,000.

“Provision of sh2.5b for inspection implies that the 5% capitation allowance from the Universal Primary Education grant will be withdrawn,” he said.

Muvawala said this while presenting a paper on primary school inspection during a conference on enhancing quality primary education at Colline Hotel in Mukono, recently.

He said the increment aims at ensuring that each of the 12,000 public schools is inspected at least twice a term.

“Every district inspector will submit monthly and quarterly reports,” he said.

Peter Lokeris, the state-minister for primary education, said more teachers would be deployed to schools to ensure that the pupil: teachers’ ratio reduces.

“This will improve the quality of learning in the classrooms,” he said.
