A beard is the hair that grows on a person’s chin, cheeks, neck, and the area above the upper lip. Beard kinds include goatee, mustache, side bands, full beard, balbo, chin strip, soul patch, chin curtain and mutton chops.

Growing a beard is traditionally a masculine activity. Men with beard have been viewed as wise and have high social status.
All across history, men have shown great respect for beards. The Mesopotamians, Egytians, Greeks had beards as far back as the 15th century. In Greek mythology, older gods with more power like Zeus, Poseidon and Hades were shown with beard

The beard growth is determined by your genes, but it may help if you look at your general health and lifestyle. A well-balanced diet is paramount, with the aim being at or near your correct weight. And obviously, if you smoke - stop, and if you use excess alcohol - cut down. Exercise and plenty of sex may also help and are highly recommend. None of these guarantees your beard will grow faster, but it may help it grow healthier.

Why women don’t have beards
During puberty, there are increases in hormones. In boys, the hormone testosterone increases and stimulates hair growth on the face, under the arms and near the sexual organs. The age when hair growth occurs varies with each person.

However, in girls, there is very little change in testosterone, but a large change in oestrogen. This hormone causes increase in body hair, but does not cause facial hair because the hair follicles on the face have no oestrogen receptor. If girls are exposed to the male hormone testosterone, they too can grow beards.

Today, growing a beard may not be fashionable. But many men still wonder what women thought about it.

What women think about beards
Shamim Ndagire, student
Men with long untrimmed beards look old and unattractive. Most of them do not know how to tidy them and it is a complete put off. However those with short trimmed beards look styled up and up-to-date, so I would choose them over those with long beards. I would not want those with no beards because they look immature.

Kay Mariam, fashion designer
I find beards very scary however decent they may look. I would comfortably settle for a man with a beard neatly trimmed to the skin than one with a grown one because they are decent. If a man cannot trim his facial hairs, how about under there? Men without beards give a good impression. This is why I would choose them over the bearded ones.

Margaret Naluswata, trader
It is true beards that show maturity but it shows immaturity when you
do not know how to manage them. It is better to shave them off completely or keep them trimmed. I do not mind whether a man has a beard or not as log as it is clean and well kempt.

Violet Nabuule, banker
Men with smooth faces are very impressive, smart and look very organised. It takes a lot to maintain a smooth and clean face. And because of this, I respect them a lot. I have no kind words for men with long unkempt beards because they are disorganised. Most of them are clueless on how to manage them and thus look like animals. My advice to them is to keep them short and well trimmed. They would look very presentable.
