THE Uganda Manufacturers’ Association’s (UMA) members have fallen to 350 due to failure to pay subscription fees. “In the 1990s, we used to have over 700 members. The number has declined to about 350 since then. Members have not paid subscription fees due to the high costs of doing business,†the association’s chairman, Kaddu Kiberu, said.
The UMA executive director, Gideon Bagadawa, said corporates are supposed to pay sh5m, large-scale manufacturers sh2.5m, upper medium-scale sh1.25m, lower medium scale sh500,000, while small-scale members sh150,000.
“The survival of any association depends on its membership and cohesion among members. This figure is too small and needs to grow compared to the fast- growing industry base in the country,†Kiberu observed.
He said this at the launch of the membership, networking and communication sub-committee that is supposed to execute the strategy of retaining and attracting members.
“Membership subscription contributes 23% to the budget needed to run the association. For UMA to be sustainable, this figure must rise,†he said.
The committee chairman, Paul Mutawe, said their first assignment would be to visit all members and find out what has made them fail to pay subscription.
