Cholera deaths increase in Kasese

The death toll of people dying of cholera in Kasese district has risen to four in one week. The district health secretary, Rehema Muhindo, also disclosed that 139 cases of cholera had been reported in two months.

The death toll of people dying of cholera in Kasese district has risen to four in one week. The district health secretary, Rehema Muhindo, also disclosed that 139 cases of cholera had been reported in two months.

Muhindo was on Tuesday addressing district councillors at the council hall in Rukoki. She said Nyakiyumbu sub-county was the most affected followed by Karambi. Muhindo urged residents of the affected areas to avoid drinking unboiled water and eating food sold at the roadsides.

She also appealed to them to stop using the the water guard tablets meant to purify water to wash clothes. The Red Cross Society has been distributing water guard tablets, soap and jerrycans in Bukonzo west to enable the residents improve sanitation and hygiene in the area.

Cholera has persisted in Kasese since March. The district health educator, Gabriel Tibuhwa, noted that latrine coverage in the district was still low at 75%.
