UGANDA is set to take up the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July under the theme ‘Post-conflict peace building for durable peace and development’.

Uganda, represented by former internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda, currently chairs the Security Council working group on conflict prevention and resolution in Africa.

International affairs minister Okello Oryem yesterday said the Government had been holding consultations on the theme ahead of its term of presidency, when it takes over from Turkey.

The United Nations has over the years been engaged in various peace keeping missions but these have not always led to durable peace, Oryem noted.
“The end of war does not necessarily mean the beginning of an era of peace.
“There is need to go beyond mere peace-keeping and address the underlying causes of conflict.”

He explained that the theme was largely based on the Ugandan experience, which could help in the debate on how to resolve conflicts in Africa.

“We hope that this will be a lasting contribution and legacy of our tenure in the UN Security Council long after our term has ended,” Oryem added.

Ugandan won a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council earlier this year and will serve a two-year term, in which it represents the African region.
