THE Pallisa Child and Family Protection Unit officer has been suspended for allegedly mishandling Jenipher Alupot’s case. Alupot is the woman who was allegedly forced by her husband, Nathan Awoloi, to breastfeed dogs.

Pallisa district Police chief Amos Gumisiriza yesterday said: “I suspended Florence Amijong two weeks ago for handling such a sensitive matter alone.”
The eastern regional Police commander, Alphonse Mbuga, said Amijong mismanaged the case, adding that she would be prosecuted in the Police court.

“If we find her guilty she will either be demoted from corporal, have her salary deducted or be dismissed from the force. Dismissal and having her salary deducted can only be approved by the Inspector General of Police,” he said.
Mbuga added that such a case should have been forwarded to the regional offices in Mbale.

Meanwhile, a team of women activists under the Uganda Women’s Network on Tuesday visited Alupot at the Women Won’t Wait centre, where she is being accommodated. The centre assists women victims of violence.

The network coordinator, Rita Aciro, said the group would mobilise funds to help Alupot construct a permanent house.

Rose Nsenge, a FIDA lawyer, who travelled to Pallisa, however, said there were gaps in Alupot’s case.

“There are no provisions in the law to charge Awoloi for forcing his wife to breastfeed dogs. The case of assault may hold but it is tricky,” Nsenge said.
She said FIDA was gathering evidence to take on Alupot’s case.
