THE Uganda Cricket Association UCA moved a step closer to starting work on the proposed Brian Charles Lara Academy on Monday after raising sh115m for the project at a dinner at Serena Hotel’s Victoria Hall.

Visiting West Indian cricket ace Lara contributed $10,000 (sh22m) and the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner, Patrick Edwards $2,000 (sh4.4m). The project will be constructed on Entebbe road.

At the fund-raising, Vaya Kumar, the director of Vaya Forex Bureau bought an autographed cricket bat and a set of documents signed by Lara at a cost of sh39m.

“I am a good fan of Lara. I really needed these memorabilia,” he said. Shukla Mukesh of Shumuk Group added sh30m to the drive, while Shell, Air Uganda and Ice Mark also contributed big.

The dinner was sponsored by MTN, whose chief executive officer Themba Khumalo promised more support to sports.

The academy will have three pitches, a pavilion, indoor gym and a hostel.

* Lara is expected to feature in a Twenty20 match at Lugogo when Uganda takes on a select side on Friday.

* Arthur Kyobe emerged man of the series at the end of the second edition of the NCR Twenty20 tournament on Sunday. He won a return air ticket to Dubai from Emirates and accommodation courtesy of Satguru Travels.
