Three people died when a speeding taxi rammed into a stationary truck at Magodesi on Tororo-Mbale highway in Tororo district recently.

The accident happened at 7:00pm when the taxi, which was moving from Mbale to Busia, veered off the road after its driver lost control at a sharp corner.

Tororo district officer for traffic Moses Mugimba identified the dead as Dr. Richard Obale, a veterinary doctor, Harkahn Raujibhai, an Asian businessman and a woman only identified as Jane.

Twelve other passengers aboard the taxi sustained serious injuries. One of the casualties, Yusuf Mudome, who sustained fractures on both legs, said the passengers urged the driver to reduce speed, but he ignored them.

The driver who was unhurt escaped after the accident. The Police are hunting for him. The Police and residents used axes to remove the people from the vehicle and rushed them to Tororo Hospital.

The Police said the truck, which was destined to Busia, had broken down in the morning. They added that its driver and turn-boy had thrown branches in the road a few yards away from the vehicle to warn motorists to reduce speed.
