MPS on the defence and internal affairs committee have recommended that Mbale Police barracks be demolished. The chairperson, Bwambale Bihandi, said the houses are not fit for habitation.
He noted that the houses had not been renovated since the 1960s. The MPs were touring Police and Prisons barracks in the north and eastern regions.
Bihandi said they wanted to establish how the funds in the 2004/2005 budget were used. He noted that different families were sharing rooms in the dilapidated houses. Bihandi said the Government was not allocating enough resources to improve the accommodation of policemen.
The MPs were accompanied by the Police human resources director, Chris Opio and were received by the eastern regional Police chief, Alphonse Mbuga, at Malaba Police Station.
The team on Monday visited Kirinya Prisons in Jinja. The officer in-charge of Malaba Police Post, Edward Kyaligonza, assured the MPs that they had a cordial relationship with the Kenyan police.
Kyaligonza cited inadequate accommodation, lack of manpower and vehicles as some of the problems affecting their operations.
He said he had asked the Police headquarters to provide the region with more officers to provide security for the customs points. Opio noted that the Force receives only sh40m monthly to renovate houses and for emergencies.
In Tororo Police barracks, the MPs were shocked to see sewage flowing in front of the houses. Bihande instructed the district Police commander, Gaudencio Okumu, to ensure that a soak-pit for the sewage is dug.
