THE increase in oil prices globally is responsible for the hike in local pump prices, Ivan Kyayonka, a Shell Uganda official, has said.

Over the last two days, the pump prices for petrol and diesel rose by sh50, while kerosene shot up by about sh130.

Yesterday, petrol was selling at sh2,350 from sh2,300 earlier this week, diesel moved from sh1,950 to sh2,000 in most Kampala filling stations while kerosene was selling at sh1,780 from sh1,650.

Earlier this week, international prices rose by over 50% hitting $80 (sh168,000) a barrel from $33 (sh69,300) a week before.

Kyayonka said the appreciation of the US dollar against the shilling from sh1,670 late last year to sh2,200 led to a general price increase locally.
