Father’s Day- Tribute to dad

Jun 18, 2009

AT times my elder brother reminds me of the times our father used to talk about me whenever visitors came home. Dad used to tell everyone how hard working I was. Although I was little, I was his precious girl.

Even after he left, I loved him

AT times my elder brother reminds me of the times our father used to talk about me whenever visitors came home. Dad used to tell everyone how hard working I was. Although I was little, I was his precious girl.

Dad and mum met when he was in his 20s. For sometime, the two seemed to have a good relationship, but as time went on, dad was never at home. Eventually, they separated when I was about five.

Although mom took good care of me and my three siblings, I felt abandoned. We did not see dad for a long time. After dad’s departure, we encountered many problems; financial and social.

My younger brother and I were taken to live with our aunt, while my elder sister and brother stayed with mom.
One day, aunt announced that we were going to meet dad.

I was so anxious that I failed to eat supper. The following day, she prepared us and took us to the taxi stage where we met our step-mother, who took us to dad.

Throughout the journey, only dad was on my mind. Despite his failure to remain committed to mom, I longed to be with him.

Finally, we reached dad’s home. I saw him standing in the doorway, waiting for us. Filled with happiness, I ran towards him. Unknown to me, there was a trench in the compound. I tripped and fell, bruising my elbow.

By the time I reached him for a hug, I was in tears. Today, I still have the scar, a reminder of my emotional reunion with dad.

In spite of his mistakes, my father remains dear to me. With love, I wish my dad, Patrick Monday, a blessed Father’s Day.
