ASK THE EXPERTS

Dear Sir,
I have heard of bachelor of statistics and many of my friends have opted for it. So far what I know is that mathematics is an essential, but I would also like to know what kind of jobs one can get, which places to work and what is the market for it?

Bachelor of statistics is a three-year course offered at Makerere University’s Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics and in a few other universities. The course covers the study of quantitative data analysis, including estimation, prediction and hypothesis testing. It can be applied in many fields — the physical, biological, social sciences as well as business, finance, engineering and information technology.

The programme involves a core in mainstream statistical application and theory, supplemented by studies in specialist streams. Students may choose to specialise in a number of areas, including business statistics, econometrics, financial statistics, mathematical statistics and psychological or social research methods.

Careers in statistics

According to Prof. James Ntozi of Makerere University’s Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics, the degree offers a wide range of career prospects.

Among others, one can work as:
  • A statistician. Today, all government ministries, government and private organisations have a statistics office and officers.

  • Economist. This programme offers a good background for people who eventually become economists since it covers economics.

  • Accountant

  • Banker

  • Auditor

  • You can also work in the fields of:
  • Applied research, for example market research

  • Academic research, particularly social sciences

  • Business analysis in the finance and banking sector.

  • Prof Ntozi asserts that bachelor of statistics is one of the most marketable science courses today. This, he says, is due to the course’s unique packaging to embrace both theory and practical aspects of the discipline.

Ntozi advises that in order to do this course well, one needs to have a good grasp of mathematics. He says the remuneration for statisticians usually varies depending on the employers.

Felix Wamono, the outgoing general secretary of the Uganda Statistical Society, says the starting gross salary for graduates ranges from sh1m to sh1.2m in government companies and sh1.6m to sh1.7m in private firms.
