Interaction with people from a culturally diverse background is the basis of respect. The diversity of backgrounds and cultures creates a spirit of tolerance, patience, easiness, open-mindedness and liberalism which are ideals of any progressive society, including Uganda’s. Article 21 of the Constitution provides that a person shall not be discriminated against on the ground of sex, race, colour, ethnic origin, tribe, birth, creed or religion.
It is incumbent on every Ugandan to fight against negative stereotypes of any tribe. Legally and morally, a few individuals’ arrogance, rudeness or impatience cannot be visited to the whole tribe or community.
Many countries are founded upon the ideal that all are created equal, and countries have shed blood and struggled for centuries to give meaning to those words.
I associate myself with the President in thanking the youth for breaking the cultural barriers through inter-marriages. This shows that currently, young people are judging themselves not because of negative stereotypes but because of character content and compatibility. Kampala houses people from virtually all indigenous tribes.
Given our inter-dependence, any practice that elevates one tribe or group of people over another will undoubtedly fail. So whatever we think of the past, we must not be prisoners
of it. Our problems must be dealt with through partnership; our progress must be shared as Ugandans. Negative stereotypes can be avoided, without prejudice to the natural love and affection people may have for their cultures, customs and traditions.
I have been a salesman and having customers from all walks of life is an interesting experience. You do not only maximise profits but you also make friends.
Both a lawyer and a doctor would love to have new clientele without regarding tribal backgrounds.
Ugandans have travelled widely because they believe and understand the importance of interdependence. Politicians also know this truth when they want to win an election. They try to bring people together because they believe that their victory is their unity. Let not only money and votes bring us together but the fact that we are all created in the image of God.
