A sh300m gravity water project has been commissioned in Hoima district. The project in Bulyango trading centre in Kitooba sub-county was on Tuesday handed over to the residents by the Minister for Water and Environment, Maria Mutagamba.

The project is part of the Government’s efforts to end water shortage. “I have handed over this water project to you on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni who promised to bring you safe water so that you can have good health,” Mutagamba said.

She told the residents of Hoima that the Government had given them the project to thank them for their support. Mutagamba asked the residents to protect the water scheme and keep it functioning.

She said the Government, through the rural water coverage programme, had increased the number of people accessing safe water to over 18 million from two million people in 1990. She added that 71% of the people in urban centres have access to safe water.

Mutagamba also asked Hoima residents to begin harvesting rain water to save the women and children from trekking long distances in search for water.
