THE Parliamentary Forum on food security and population has drafted a motion seeking to block exportation of food to southern Sudan, the forum’s chairperson has said.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi (Kinkizi East) said the move would solve the current food shortage in the Teso region.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, he said much as the areas had been hit by prolonged drought, the exportation of food had escalated the situation. “Although people get money from selling food, they should not starve.â€
Baryomunsi also attacked agriculture state minister Aggrey Bagiire who had earlier said the Teso region was facing famine because the people were lazy and drunkards.
He said the situation was an emergency that needed everybody’s intervention, instead of putting the blame on the people.
On Wednesday, MPs from the region walked out of a meeting with disaster preparedness minister Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere protesting the Governments delayed intervention.
Reports indicate that seven people have so far died of hunger.
