LETTER OF THE WEEK

Pupils and students with disabilities in this country are severely marginalised. For example, none of the schools I have visited so far has a special latrine for the disabled yet it is very difficult for a lame child to use the ordinary latrines.

In some Government-aided schools like Bubaare Primary School in Ibanda where there are deaf children, there are no special teachers for them. Does this mean Ibanda has no vote for the disabled or does it not have children with disabilities?

I am sure the situation is the same in every district throughout the country. What does the money meant for the disabled do? I request the area MPs to emulate the spirit of the former mp Deo Rwabiita who, during his tenure, was able to establish a school for the deaf in the area.

I sincerely thought that the new MP, Mr John Byabagambi was going to improve the situation and change the fortunes of the disabled for the better. To my dismay, he has done no such thing.

I appeal to all the stakeholders to come to the rescue of children with disabilities.
