THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) spends more than sh2.5b on rent in Kampala every year, commissioner general Allen Kagina has revealed.

Appearing before the commissions, statutory authorities and state enterprises committee recently, Kagina said: “We would like to build our own offices in Kampala to stop renting. We are paying a lot of money which would have been saved for other things.”

Kagina added that the tax body planned to get a loan from the National Social Security Fund to build.

She appealed to Parliament to allocate the tax body funds for the construction of their own buildings.

The committee, headed by Aswa County MP Reagan Okumu, supported URA’s decision and promised to help them build their own offices.

Kagina also disclosed that the renovation of URA offices at the border points had started.

She also said alternative accommodation was rented for the Masaka and Mbarara stations.

Recent Auditor General’s reports had said the Masaka domestic taxes office had dilapidated walls and leakages in the roof, which put staff, taxpayers and records at risk.
