RENOWNED scholar Prof. Mahmood Mamdani has urged African leaders to look for opportunities from the global financial crisis to help them overcome their predicament.

He said: “The real challenge lies in establishing a social and political arrangement that creates alternatives and transforms the economic crisis into a political opportunity.”

Mamdani made the remarks while launching Prof. Dani Nabudere’s book titled The Global Capitalist Crisis and The Way Forward For Africa at Hotel Africana, Kampala recently.

Nabudere, who is the head of the Marcus Garvey Pan-African Institute, urged the Government to embrace the East African regional currency. He said this would help the region to address the challenges to regional integration.

Addressing the audience, which included Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, Nabudere urged the Government to ensure food security in the country.

Nabudere told Nsibambi that it was absurd that food was being exported to Southern Sudan yet Ugandans were starving.

Nsibambi assured Nabudere that the Government was addressing the issue of famine and feeding the affected people.
