JIMMY Kirunda might have been one of Uganda’s greatest footballers, but it has taken him 27 years to receive his testimonial.

The former Cranes and KCC skipper was on Thursday rewarded for his numerous achievements with the John Biribonwa award.

“To me this trophy is just like the testimonial match that I never got,” said a jubilant Kirunda after getting the trophy from a member of the John Biribonwa family, Kenneth Atugonza, at the Sheraton Hotel.

Biribonwa played a key role in football promotion in Bunyoro from the fifties to the seventies.

The award annually coincides with the Biribonwa Cup final that will this year have defending champions Buruli taking on Buyaga.

The final, coming after a month of qualifiers amongst Bunyoro counties, will be played on Saturday in Masindi stadium.
