Barclays Bank has been named the best bank in Africa by Euromoney, a finance magazine. According to the African Regional Awards of Excellence released by Euromoney, Barclays emerged winner of the Best Bank category, while ABSA Capital scooped the Best Debt House award.
Commenting on the award, Charles Ongwae, the Barclays Bank-Uganda managing director, said: “This award is a testimony to the role Barclays is playing not only in Uganda, but also towards Africa’s economic advancement.â€
He said the award also underscored the trust stakeholders, especially customers, had in the bank in times when the global banking sector was under increased scrutiny.
“We shall continue to offer innovative banking services throughout our 53 branches and 81 automatic teller machines,†he said.
He reiterated that the bank remained focused on playing a key role in Uganda and Africa by helping attract investments to bring about economic development on the continent.
The magazine lauded the bank’s commitment to Africa despite a fall in the sub-region’s gross domestic product growth from 5% in 2008 to 1.5% this year.
“Those with commitment have not forgotten the region and still see big opportunities there.â€
The Euromoney Awards for Excellence are among the most respected awards in the industry.
